❥ Beautiful scenes in Doctor Who | Vincent & The Doctor
“Van Gogh is the finest painter of them all. Certainly the most popular, great painter of all time. The most beloved, his command of colour most magnificent. He transformed the pain of his tormented life into ecstatic beauty. Pain is easy to portray, but to use your passion and pain to portray the ecstasy and joy and magnificence of our world, no one had ever done it before. Perhaps no one ever will again. To my mind, that strange, wild man who roamed the fields of Provence was not only the world’s greatest artist, but also one of the greatest men who ever lived.”
This is my favourite scene in Doctor Who of all time. And, it actually has nothing to do with Doctor Who. I have a love for Van Gogh and have visited the museum in Amsterdam every spring since I was 13 together with my grandmother. The second time, at the age of 14, there was a pianist playing music titled “inspired by Van Gogh” (I think) and all of a sudden I was stood there before his art, crying because I understood his portray of pain and madness. Despite his flawed mind he managed to channel it through to his brush strokes and show us the wonders of the world.
The quote from the episode is so right and captures Van Gogh’s true essence. I cannot read the words without becoming teary. Whether it’s Bill Nighy’s voice, or Tony Curran’s marvelous performance, or the camera’s excellent control of the atmosphere, I do not know. Maybe it is just the fantastic Vincent Van Gogh.
